My Story
Hi, I’m Doc Mac…
When I turned 52, I went into andropause and I gained a bunch of weight. It was like overnight, and it wasn’t like I got FAT all over! I actually had a belly for the first time in my life. It really hit me below the belt. I think there’s a pun in there, somewhere.
The reason it bothered me so much. Was that my wife and I had this very successful nutritional medicine practice, which means we owned a weight loss center. I was a doctor and she was my nurse and she was also a nutritionist.
I KNEW HOW TO EAT!
I KNEW HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT!
At least I thought I did…
BUT NO MATTER WHAT I DID I COULD NOT LOSE MY ANDROPAUSAL WEIGHT!
Do you know what that does to your confidence? No matter what diet I tried. Nothing worked! I cut my calories. I joined a gym. I hired a personal trainer. And my belly continued to grow and grow. My face became rounder and rounder. Remember, I am a researcher and developer of nutritional protocols.
My wife suggested that I test my hormones. I laughed at her! I’m 52! No one has hormone problems at 52. She eventually ordered me a hormone test. I took it and guess what? She was right! Don’t you hate when that happens?
My testosterone was sitting on empty, and my feminine hormone, called estradiol, was way too high. My hormones were way out of balance. I would have never guessed.
My wife went looking for a hormone doctor. There were no doctors near us that knew anything about the male hormones. I mean, we knew endocrinologists but they all seemed to specialize in every kind of hormone except the male hormones.
In fact, the “hormone doctors” we did know told me to live with it. It was part of aging, they said.
I’M 52!
I was bound and determined to lose my belly not to just look better but I knew I needed to get my old waist back. If I wanted to live longer,
All the research said that you live as long as your waist is small…
And my practice couldn’t have an overweight doctor sitting behind the desk.
We found a “real” hormone doctor several hours from where we lived. He tested all my hormones and he said,
“You have the hormone levels of a man twice your age. You are in full-blown male menopause.”
I wanted to scream at him! This doctor started me on hormone therapy. He had me taking several different hormones. It was a miracle!
NOT!
The hormones made me bloat! And I gained even more weight! My belly size increased! I started having bilateral carpal tunnel symptoms. I also had to walk the walls with my hands during my night urination. And those got worse too. I later found out that these hormones were making my prostate swell.
I QUIT!
Then…
Months later…
My wife and I were at a medical conference. We were having a cocktail in the lounge. A doctor that I had met in one of my classes asked if he could join us. As we were enjoying our cocktails, he started talking about how he had ridden his bike over the Sierra.
I asked him what his age was. He was 76 years old! He had a body with like zero fat on it. Not even a hint of a belly. And his shoulders were solidly square like a bodybuilder’. I was 52 and I couldn’t ride my bike across town. Riding a bike over the Sierra! I couldn’t even imagine.
I asked him what his secret was.. And he said…
HORMONES!
I said, “Been there done that!” He said, “You did it wrong then.”
Do you know what the first thing I did? I registered for a hormone conference sponsored by The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. I could not believe what I learned. I went on to eventually take the test to become Board Certified in Anti-Aging Medicine. I passed.
I started using what I had learned on myself. What happened next was amazing. My ability to lose my weight returned. YAY! I lost the andropause belly! I felt and looked younger!
And I did it all naturally…
My wife and I opened a hormone and weight optimization clinic for men and women. In eighteen months we opened 6 more clinics. They were located all over Northern California.
At the age of 60, I retired and I went into coaching andropausal men. I now spend my time teaching what we have learned over the last 4 decades. First as a weight loss expert, then as a weight loss and hormone expert.

Hormone Optimization
When we first opened our weight and hormone optimization clinics, we used synthetic hormones. Then we moved to bioidentical hormones. Everyone loved us! But after a year or two, we started seeing that our patients grew an immunity to hormone therapy. This is when we deiced that we had to find a more long-lasting natural approach. We utilized dozens of tools and have found a dozen that work better than the others. They don’t all work so we have to find the tools that worked the best. Here is a picture of my wife and me. I am in my sixties and my wife and I have more fun now than I did at any age. I tell you, it’s all about the hromones.
Food Optimizaion
We found that I couldn’t lose my belly without better hormone levels. But the hormones needed to be simultaneously optimized alongside my food. What we found that it was all about inflammation. We ate foods that we were sensitive to. These foods caused an inflammatory response. To lose my belly I had to avoid foods that caused me to inflame. Foods that I found caused an inflammatory response were oregano, glutamate, garlic, etc. To lose the belly, I didn’t have to restrict my calories. I had to restrict my food. I could eat all I wanted as long as I didn’t eat foods that caused me to inflame. Inflammation is the primary hormone disruptor. The picture is again me in my sixties hanging out at The Fountainbleu Hotel in Miami. I no longer have a belly. Hormones may make you feel younger but food is what makes you look younger.
Liver Optimization
We found to accelerate my weight and hormone optimization, I had to also optimize my liver function. My liver is in charge of fat burning. If my liver is fatty, I can’t burn fat as efficiently as I would like. If my liver is fatty, I will have less uptake of my testosterone and growth hormone. If my liver is fatty, I will have resistance to insulin. If my insulin levels are higher than they should be, I will be in a fat storing state all the time. The liver plays a very important and key role to not only losing weight but to my hormone levels also. I realized that I could not ignore the liver if I wanted to look great and feel great. This picture was taken this winter. With a better functioning liver my energy levels are off the chart.
